dragostea din tei

some of you may have already seen this, but if you go here, scroll down a little bit and click on the video on the left (there's two), it's Gary Brolsma lip-synching to "Dragostea Din Tei" by O-zone. The latter are a Romanian dance/pop (synth wizard) group that were inadvertently made famous (in the U.S., since they already had had a big hit with the song across Europe) by the former, who spontaneously did a webcam performance of the song (which he had found on the net and thought it was funny) and sent the file to some of his friends. Little did he realize the chain reaction it would set off. His friends sent it to their friends, who sent to their friends, and so on and so forth, until the unknown kid from Jersey became world-famous. He was invited on Letterman, Good Morning America, etc. This was at the end of last year/beginning of this year...he has subsequently gotten VERY sick of his own mug and actually refused to go on one talk show. His video is seriously THE funniest lip-synching performance that I have EVER seen. I watched it over and over, and it never got less funny.

You can also watch the video for the original single, next to the video of Gary. It's vaguely a-ha "Take On Me".

new music

so here are some people that i had never heard before but found either through ITunes or b/c Borders has that cool thing where you can listen to the entire CD if they have it on display. Relient K had their single "Be My Escape" on ITunes last week, and I really like it. It's reminiscent of Blink 182's "What's My Age Again?" but less annoying. I'm not linking Blink 182, b/c generally they're not so Mormon-friendly. I also bought Jack Johnson's latest CD, since I listened to a lot of it at Borders. You can get music for much cheaper on ITunes, since you're forfeiting the CD itself, including jacket and lyrics. But the way I see it, you can always find the lyrics on the internet, unless it's in a foreign language (then it's harder). Anyway, Jack Johnson is vaguely John Mayer-ish, kind of laid-back, low-key singing with one guitar. He's good.
The other recent good free single is "I Predict A Riot" by The Kaiser Chiefs. Think British rock...you'd have to see.

flash

so did you know that Kent State is home to the "Golden Flashers"? it's a little-known fact. the football fans run around in trenchcoats....WOOOOOOOO!! scare the little old ladies walking down Main St. Good times, good times. great oldies, 105.7.

so i have itunes, which has new music every Tuesday, AND usually a couple of free singles. i'm saying this b/c i'm about to download this week's free songs. it's a pretty cool feature, despite the fact that you get some sucky songs sometimes. but sometimes you get some cool ones from bands or singers you've never heard of before. it's like shopping the $1 CD bin at Record Exchange. "you never know what you're gonna GET."

yogi bear

k, so i'm done with the freshman schedules for right now. classes are already filling up for the fall, so several times today i've had to tell the incoming frosh, sorry, you can't take that class. and all the remedial math courses are full, so those students coming in now will have to take it in the spring. spanish and asl (american sign language) filled up like a week ago, so people that have put off fulfilling the Language requirement are scrambling now.

for those of you who don't know, usually once a week i put together fall schedules for some incoming freshmen who are going to be majoring in the college of Arts and Sciences. today and yesterday were the first times i've done this by myself, so yesterday i was a little nervous. but both days it went really well.

tee hee, tee hee, said Kerry without thinking.

bus

so i was on the bus this morning and this old dude with a raspy low, drunk voice says to the driver, "I had quite the cocktail last night. I accidentally threw all my wife's medication down the toilet. That would've killed Andre the Giant."

i couldn't stop laughing. if anyone's ever seen me trying not to laugh, it's really quite comical in and of itself, even if you have no idea what i'm laughing at. It was pretty much because he said toilet, followed almost immediately by Andre the Giant...yeah. If Kevo had been with me, I would've lost it completely. Would you like a refill on your lemonade?

links

k, so i just spent a lot of time messing around, finding and adding links for everyone's general pleasure.

I guess a bunch of people from the program are going to go see The Interpreter on Saturday, and I would really like to go, but I have so much homework to do, and I figure that if I missed class to stay off of my leg, I really should continue to stay off it. but the movie calls....... and then there's things like laundry that get in the way. i need to do laundry like nobody's business.

Dubya lost

Every time I listen to Dubya I feel like I'm in middle school. Yeah, you better repeat what you just said one more time, b/c I don't think we got it. And maybe you better rephrase it and say it just one more time. Reminds me of that SNL sketch when Dana Carvey was making fun of Bush, Sr: "Well, I must have used up the rest of my time in talking about it just now." "Um, no, Mr. President; you still have a minute twenty."

so i was semi-watching Survivor last night, and I was thinking that I could've rocked the house on the immunity challenge thing where they were throwing the coconuts. They had two coconuts and they were banging 'em together!!

hoooooooooooah hoooooooooooah

ah yeah.........we have linkage. that's what i freakin' thought!!!!!!!

so in other news, i may be in negotiations to get Dad out here to give a workshop on Google for the program in the fall. I was talking to him yesterday, and he had mentioned giving one elsewhere. So I just sent an email to the president of our student organization here to see if something could be worked out. That'd be pretty cool if he came...it'd be a chance to see him and also a way to help out the translation program here. I hope it works out.

Also, my sister Lauren got accepted to some kind of special summer college program for high school seniors that are doing well. It's a one month program, and I think she'll be studying Biology and Life Sciences. Congrats, Lauren!

so i skipped class yesterday, right? but i have no choice about working all day today and all day tomorrow, b/c if i don't, i have to make up those hours, and i'm already behind. so i was terrified i'd run into one of my professors today, and he'd be like, "WHAT ARE YOU DOING ON YOUR FEET??" which, he'd be entirely right to ask me that, since i shouldn't be on my feet at ALL, but i have no choice. So I brought the little appt card from the doctor's office with me, just in case. i would still look so guilty, though. i am the not-so-proud owner of the world's most expressive face. :)

I have a translation due on Wednesday: FREAKING HEMINGWAY INTO SPANISH!!
My prof has no qualms about giving us the literary masters to translate, which, in theory, is a good thing, but when you're going through it....not so cool. But it's all good, b/c then stuff that is still difficult will be a breeze compared to some of the works we've had to translate this semester. He's had us translate Jorge Luis Borges, Cervantes (Don Quijote), José Martí, WALT WHITMAN, etc. These are some of the all-time literary greats. I'll go to my prof's office just to bounce ideas off of him, and he'll just laugh at my woes... (he's a great guy, but i think he gets a kick out of our pain sometimes....jk)

My Macromedia Flash project is due this coming Wednesday...regoarrarr. I haven't even started, and i haven't looked at the Flash book since my workshop ended in mid-March. so i have to figure out what i want to do, and then how to do it. i'll be spending most of Saturday on it. i don't even want to put it on my website...i wish i had more time to spend on it, but such is grad school.

k, that's it for now.

link THIS

so anyway, about the movie Bandits, ryan would love it b/c it's got Cate Blanchett in it, and there are no bad scenes that i can recall. this is a test to see if my link works, since the cincy millers are giving me flak.

fyi

for those of you who are not aware, my blog title is from the movie "Bandits" and is said by the ever irrepressible Billy Bob Thornton. and, for those of you who remember when i kept rewinding "Gunga din....hey gunga" over and over and laughing hysterically every time, this line is also worthy of such distinction.

so i'm skipping class right now, because the physical therapist told me to stay off of my leg. However, since I don't have a choice about working tomorrow or Friday all day, I have to be on it. Which bites, b/c this will go away faster if I could just rest it. Regoarrarr. The guy told me I tend to pronate, which means that my feet go in when I walk, so the muscles have to work harder to pull them back out to compensate, and so when I run, they're overworked. Same thing if I walk for long periods of time. I also may have vascular problems, since he said my legs and feet are different colors. That would tend to explain why my hands and especially feet are always so cold. If it's a vascular problem (blood circulation), he may send me back to the *real* doctor to see what he can do about it. For now, he said to get some New Balance running shoes and he'd put temporary insole type things in them to see if that helps. If I feel like it does, they can do permanent ones, which freaking cost $220!!!!!!! hmmm. but, if that does help, i may not have much of a choice.

all righty, off to homework schtuff.

don't call it a comeback!!

This is the first post of my new blog.
